Embracing & Recognizing Progress Over Perfection

Since we started our monthly retrospective series in July of 2022, we always strived to complete these reflections by the first of every month. We wanted to remind ourselves to reflect on our journey more consciously by collecting moments from our day-to-day lives and discussing the past month on a bigger scale encompassing where we were taking our lives overall. We did not want everything else to pass us by or be funneled into a mental folder of the past where all we remember is working. We wanted to note the little moments along the way as a part of our journey and learn from them while celebrating wins, no matter how big, small, exciting, or mundane.

Now with only 2 months to go until we accomplish 1 full year of the series, we could not believe that we were being so hard on ourselves to publish them on the first of the month even though that deadline was entirely self-imposed. Sure, there are those who look forward to these more than we'd ever know, so sometimes we feel like we would be letting you down, but it also comes from our unhealthy strive for perfection.

We often get caught up in the idea that everything we do must be as great as possible (often confused for perfect) and that everything deserves the utmost care and attention. But this mindset can be paralyzing and prevents us from taking the necessary steps to move forward with our goals and intentions. Why put even more stress on being one day late for a self-imposed deadline with no significant or overtly negative ramifications? As creators, it's important to have deadlines and actionable items to complete our creations, as we're always emphasizing the importance of quality and consistency, but when you are creating for yourself or your community, there really is no need to put on any added pressure to be perfect with what you set out to do. But at the end of the day, this community that we are lucky to be a part of has always been both supportive AND patient, so why is it so easy to justify pushing ourselves to the limit, often to our detriment?

Embracing progress over perfection, and recognizing that every step we take no matter how small, will always bring us closer to achieving what we set out to do and feels more impactful to the creation cycle. As long as you are learning and having fun, you will improve with time and consistency, no matter what you hope to accomplish.

For example, this year, we've already created more videos in just 4 months than we did in the entirety of 2022. The statistics and analytics that came from our productivity have been incredible to watch, and while we've been thoroughly enjoying the creative process more than ever too, we were still being super hard on ourselves if we took a day (or weekend) off from creating and publishing. We felt like we were hindering our own progress, but we forgot one crucial thing. Part of progress is also recognizing that we may encounter failures, setbacks, self-doubt, and negative feelings. In these moments, we are tested the most.

Why were we doing this to ourselves? There can be many reasons why. But rather than dwelling on it, we're trying to unlearn that over time. Accepting that it's not always going to be a smooth ride is so important, and even if you take a break from time to time, that's okay. Your mind and body need time to recharge and reflect, and that in and of itself is growth and progress too as we hope to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Here are some things that happened this past April in our lives:

  • Went to NYC for the biggest business trip of our lives to date!

  • Got to be a part of a photoshoot at the MET!

  • Squeezed in some fun in NYC exploring Central Park, The Nintendo Store, and lots of amazing restaurants and bakeries!

  • Got sick with some common colds that really kicked our butts after avoiding getting sick for a good long while.

  • Recognized that this was the first tax season in 5 years (since becoming small business owners) that we weren't stressed down to the deadline because we finally found an incredible CPA!

  • Planned to celebrate Fiesta, but the weather said NO so we did our own thing at home.

  • Published 44 videos on YouTube!

  • Had a video on TikTok go viral which has encompassed over 300K+ views and 20K+ likes which also helped us reach 1500 followers!

  • Reached over 2600 subscribers on YouTube!

  • Last but not least, we finally acquired the Zelda BOTW plushie to match our Link plushie (even though she is slightly bigger for some reason lol), and our ongoing TLOZ collection feels more complete.

  • Shared exclusive content with our amazing Patron Glob supporters:

  • Didn't complete any games on the channel this past month, but we started TLOZ: Breath of the Wild and are en route to completing all the mainline Zelda games before Tears of the Kingdom releases!

  • Games we played in general: Mario Kart, Super Mario Odyssey, Overwatch, Minecraft, TLOZ: Breath of the Wild, Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, Bioshock, Fall Out 4, Elden Ring, and Animal Crossing New Horizons

  • Things we watched: Better Call Saul, A Man Called Otto, The Company You Keep, Next Level Chef, A Million Little Things, Love Is Blind, Bel-Air, Abbott Elementary, Bobs Burgers, and The Light We Carry

Thank you for reflecting with us! If you’d like to share what you've been up to this past month, please comment below, reach out to us through your favorite platform, or swing by a live stream on YouTube to chat with us. We love hearing from y'all!
